Can ChatGPT build a website for you?
Yes. With OpenAI’s ChatGPT Sites feature, you can describe a website in plain sentences, and ChatGPT will build it, let you preview it, and publish it (k1). You can also use ChatGPT as a guide even if it isn’t building the site directly, from picking a domain name to writing the content (k4). But for a business website, “building” it and “having a site that actually works” are not the same thing. That difference is what this article is really about.
What does ChatGPT actually do?
ChatGPT Sites, which OpenAI introduced in July 2026, is part of the ChatGPT Work plan, and it can build and host a site based on a plain-text description (k1). As of September 2026, OpenAI reported that more than 5 million sites had been created on the platform, and features like collaboration, controlled sharing, and custom domain connection were added (k3).
A few important details:
- The feature is a beta rolling out gradually on paid plans; it’s not available on the Free or Go plans (k1).
- To connect a custom domain, you first need to buy your own domain and configure the DNS records yourself (k1, k3).
- It’s currently unavailable in the EEA, Switzerland, and the UK (k1).
Say you own a boutique. If you ask ChatGPT to “put together a one-page site for my boutique with a warm, friendly tone,” it can produce a draft within minutes (k2). For someone who has never built a site before, that’s a fast, inspiring starting point.
A good first step, but not enough on its own
One guide spells out exactly what ChatGPT can’t do: it won’t sign up with a hosting company, buy a domain, or click buttons in a control panel for you (k4). Another source draws a similar line: integrating third-party apps and designing complex layouts aren’t areas where ChatGPT is strong.
Building your site is just the tip of the iceberg. Here’s what’s below the surface:
- Can people actually find your site on Google and in AI-generated answers?
- Who’s keeping track of SSL, backups, and accessibility?
- Are the legal pages ready, like a KVKK (Turkey’s personal data protection law) disclosure notice and a privacy policy?
- Who do you call when something breaks?
A prompting guide makes this point explicitly: AI can invent references or figures, so every claim needs to be checked before you publish, and getting professional help is recommended for anything complex, like payment processing or a membership system (k2).
How well does this fit your situation?
| Situation | Building it yourself with ChatGPT |
|---|---|
| A quick portfolio or landing page | A reasonable option |
| A one-page site for a restaurant | Fine as a starting point, but you’ll still need legal pages and visibility |
| An e-commerce store that takes payments | Not enough on its own, the integrations and infrastructure get complex |
| A corporate, multi-page business site | Maintenance, security, and SEO tracking need separate attention |
A small step you can take today
Before you rush into building a site, do this: gather your brand, target audience, services, and contact details into a single notes file (k2). If you like, use ChatGPT to put together a trial draft; it will push you to clarify your idea. But turning that draft into a site that wins customers, is easy to find, and gets properly maintained, is a separate job. Bringing your content is enough; our website service can take care of the rest.

In short
ChatGPT can genuinely build a website now, and that’s a fast, inspiring starting point. But the unseen part of the job, visibility, security, legal pages, and maintenance, doesn’t get solved on its own. If you want a site that will actually grow your business, it’s safer to use ChatGPT at the idea stage and leave the rest to a responsible team.
